New construction adjacent to two existing, occupied schools
Demolition of the two existing schools upon completion of new building
Targeting Triple Net-Zero (Energy, Water and Waste) through sustainable solutions including geothermal wells, rainwater harvesting and solar provisions
PROJECT OVERVIEW To meet current educational needs, the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District (ABRSD) is embarking on the construction of a new, three-story school that will serve two distinct school programs for ABRSD–the existing Douglas and Gates Elementary Schools. The first floor will feature common spaces including Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) labs, multi-purpose rooms, gymnasiums and the cafeteria, as well as the pre-school and CASE Collaborative classrooms. The Gates School and Douglas School will house the second and third floors respectively, joined by a two-story media center. ABRSD’s commitment to sustainability and resiliency is highlighted by it’s Triple Net-Zero target for the new school, featuring geothermal wells, roofs for rainwater harvesting and solar provisions to maximize efficient energy production. The adjacent existing schools will remain operational during the duration of construction, and upon completion, they will be demolished to make way for new parking lots and playing fields.
